Thoughts started percolating in my mind this morning after I saw the movie trailer for the 3-D movie called, The Greatest Miracle, on those of us who have visual disabilities and how fully we could experience a 3-D film.
I have lived my entire life with a visual impairment – blind in one eye – so what I have seen I perceive as “normal” even though any person who is able to see out of two eyes and had seen what I had seen may say what I had seen was “abnormal”. But, this is a matter of subjectivity, isn’t it? Or is it a matter of reality? Or are different people’s perceptions in how they view an object, a scene in a movie, or the landscape of mountains considered “normal” to only the viewer but not all of society?
The Greatest Miracle looks like a great film which focuses on the Catholic faith, the struggles each of go through with our faith, and what brings us together – The Eucharist – so regardless of whether I can see 3-D or not I am planning on viewing the movie.
I think that I am fairly safe in saying that persons who have visual disabilities, such as myself, wouldn’t experience the same phenomena as those with 20/20 vision, or those who are have vision in both eyes. The quality in which those of us with visual impairments see 3-D movies is lesser than that of someone who is able to see out of both eyes so those of us with visual impairments would not experience the full phenomenological impact of a 3-D film.
I am not saying that those of us with visual impairments are unable to take in the primary message but when we view a 3-D film is it possible for us to experience the fullness of the message that is being presented in a 3-D format?
Bishop David Ricken of Green Bay has called The Greatest Miracle a ”powerful new film” and he emphasized that the 3-D animated feature ”helps us better grasp the spiritual forces at play in our daily lives.” Now my inclination is to believe that Bishop Ricken is talking about the movie as whole and not that seeing it specifically in 3-D is necessary for us to experience the totality of the message in the film.
