I found out via Catholic Vote that the Archdiocese of Washington D.C. has written a letter rebuking Georgetown University for having chosen U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius as a speaker when her actions directly threaten Catholics, Catholic institutions and organizations right to practice their beliefs in accordance with our Faith.  This is not about contraception. This fight is about religious liberty, Catholics, Christians and all American citizens retaining our right to religious freedom which is guaranteed in the Constitution. She is an anti-Catholic Catholyc who has dissented from various Church teachings for years and causes grave scandal to the Church.  At least her bishop has made it known that she is not to receive Holy Communion until she sincerely repents for her scandalous sins, but I still think she should have been excommunicated by now – excommunicated out of love for her soul.

Here is the Archdiocese’s statement:

During the past week there has been much in the national and local news regarding the controversial selection of the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius, to be a featured speaker at an awards ceremony at Georgetown University’s Public Policy Institute. Yesterday, the President of the University, John J. DeGioia, issued a public statement in response to the concerns, objections and even outrage that have been expressed.

The Archdiocese of Washington reserved public comment to permit Georgetown University and its sponsor, the Society of Jesus, the opportunity to address the controversy. While the explanation of how this unfortunate decision was made is appreciated, it does not address the real issue for concern – the selection of a featured speaker whose actions as a public official present the most direct challenge to religious liberty in recent history and the apparent lack of unity with and disregard for the bishops and so many others across the nation who are committed to the defense of freedom of religion.

Contrary to what is indicated in the Georgetown University President’s statement, the fundamental issue with the HHS mandate is not about contraception. As the United States Bishops have repeatedly pointed out, the issue is religious freedom. Secretary Sebelius’ mandate defines religious ministry so narrowly that our Catholic schools and universities, hospitals and social service ministries do not qualify as “religious enough” to be exempt. This redefinition of religion penalizes Catholic organizations because they welcome and serve all people regardless of their faith. Ironically, because of Georgetown’s commitment to open its doors to Catholic and non-Catholic students alike, the university fails to qualify as a religious institution under the HHS mandate.

Given the dramatic impact this mandate will have on Georgetown and all Catholic institutions, it is understandable that Catholics across the country would find shocking the choice of Secretary Sebelius, the architect of the mandate, to receive such special recognition at a Catholic university. It is also understandable that Catholics would view this as a challenge to the bishops.

It is especially distressing to think that the university’s Public Policy Institute would be unaware of this national debate since the mandate was published last August. Such a radical redefining of ministry should prompt Georgetown, as a Catholic and Jesuit university, to do more to challenge the mandate and speak up for freedom of religion.

Catholic Vote is calling for unity.  They have a letter posted on CatholicsforUnity.com urging Georgetown officials to rescind the Sebelius’ invite.  On that same page is a petition which I encourage you to sign to express your outrage at this so-called Catholic university having invited a person who has shown to be an enemy to the Church to speak at a graduation ceremony.

Catholic Vote Reminds us of Sebelius’ animosity towards the Church and its brethren:

Remember this is the same Kathleen Sebelius who last year said: “We are at war” with people like us. She said those infamous words at a major fundraiser for NARAL, one of the largest and most notorious pro-abortion lobbying groups.

Make no mistake. Kathleen Sebelius is using every lever of power to promote abortion and to cripple our Church’s institutions. Her HHS mandate would bury every Catholic charity, hospital and school – including Georgetown University – in an avalanche of fines, if they refuse to comply.

It’s already happening. This week Franciscan University of Steubenville announced that they will no longer offer a student health insurance plan this fall.

If Georgetown doesn’t rescind her invite do you think that the college should lose its Catholicity or Catholic identity and financial support from the Archdiocese?

Today is the feast day of St. Athanasius.  This reminded me of something I had previously posted on my blog, Tu Ne Cede, where I asked, does the Catholic Church need another Athanasius moment?

Cafeteria Catholics (Liberals!) dissent on basic Church teachings such as those on abortion, contraception, euthanasia, the all-male priesthood, and even the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Liberalism is so rampant in the Church today that it threatens to overwhelm its traditions, much as the Arian heresy threatened the Church in the 4th century. Does the Church need another Athanasius moment?

Maggie’s Notebook Banned in Afghanistan: MSGT Tom O’Rourke – Military Poor – Misleading Leadership: In Honor of SSG Chris Kiernan

Yesterday I was notified that this blog, Maggie’s Notebook, is banned in Afghanistan on the computers soldiers use for “recreation.” As anyone reading here knows, I am an unwaivering supporter of our Troops. I have been very critical of Military leadership, from the perspective of a citizen sitting out here in the ether.

One of my fellow friend's blogs has been banned in Afghanistan. Huh? Why would the military ban her blog? This administration is filled with anti-freedom policies which censors dissent, the kind which highlights the Obama administrations political chicanery.

Sr. Carol Keehan lied when it came to Obamacare covering abortions. It does.  One more example that Obamacare does indeed cover abortion.  Her claim gave cover to naive Catholics so that they would support Obamacare.  Now she is deceiving people again, all for her personal and professional gain.  She has accepted the “compromise” even though the compromise is no real compromise at all.  Sr. Keehan said the compromise  “has responded to the issues we identified that needed to be fixed.’’  The so-called compromise didn’t change a thing.  Insurers were always going to be the ones providing the contraceptives and abortion inducing drugs.  They still are going to be the provider.  Since it is a must for employers to provide insurance to their employees there is no change.  She has chosen money over her faith.  She has chosen money over the Church’s and individuals right to religious freedom.  She is an unfaithful nun who needs to have a courageous priest, bishop, or Cardinal explain to her that her dissent from Church teaching and the bishops is unacceptable and scandalous.

Here is a very good article I thought that I would pass on to all my readers.

The article is called The Little Sisters of Limousine Liberalism by George Neumayr:

How much is Sr. Carol Keehan worth to the pro-Obamacare Catholic Health Association? Answer: $962,467.

I called up the Catholic Health Association (CHA) yesterday. I wanted to nail down the exact compensation figures for some of its executives, including the salary and benefits of Sister Obamacare, also known as Daughter of Charity nun Carol Keehan, who last week helped Barack Obama engineer his latest con job — the bogus conscience “compromise” designed to hoodwink Catholics into voting for his reelection.

As it has been widely reported, Obama conferred with Sister Keehan before his announcement last Friday. Then, lo and behold, she praised his revision as an inspiring resolution to the thorny issue of “religious freedom” soon after the sham event concluded.

So let’s get down to brass tacks. How much is Sister Keehan worth for such political interventions? The checkered Catholic hospitals Keehan represents as chief executive officer of the Catholic Health Association stand to receive gobs and gobs of cash from the federal government if Obamacare holds up past 2012. Consequently, the members of the association are more than happy to pony up huge salaries to executives skilled at manipulating the Catholic electorate for Obama.

Keehan is worth $962,467 to them in total salary and benefits, according to the Schedule J (Form 990) 2010 document sent to me by CHA. Theoretically, this is paid to the nun’s order, though CHA adds an intriguing caveat to its compensation figures:

The descriptions below provide an overview of the composition of the five compensation figure columns (B, C, D, E and F). Note that for Sisters Carol Keehan and Patricia Talone and for Father Tom Nairn, all amounts in column B, except for certain fringe benefits included in column (B)(iii), were paid to their respective orders.

In other words, not all the money goes to their religious orders. What are these “certain fringe benefits” to which the caveat refers? I didn’t get a comprehensible answer from CHA. But its spokesman assured me that these “certain fringe benefits” weren’t large. Maybe the Wall Street Journal should drill down into the numbers.

According to the form, base compensation for “Daughters of Charity for Sr. Keehan” was $682,982. “Bonus and incentive compensation” was $136,000. “Other reportable compensation” — which is the (B)(iii) to which the caveat refers — was $131,888. Nontaxable benefits were $11,597. All this adds up to salary and benefits totaling $962,467.

Presumably, her 2011 salary and benefits will exceed $1 million, if the past is any measure. (Her 2009 salary and benefits fell in the $850,000 range.)

It turns out that left-wing “Catholic Social Justice” is a good career move. Sister Talone, to which the caveat refers above, pulls down for the Sisters of Mercy “$416,623″ in total compensation, while Fr. Nairn’s order, the Franciscan Friars, snatched $194,947.

Who knew that lobbying for the corporal works of mercy paid so well? Of course, the dirty little secret of secularized “non-profit” Catholic hospitals is that they rake in enormous profits. Hence, some of its executives garner salaries/benefits north of $9 million. Obamacare will release another avalanche of federal government cash with which to feather their nests.

“For where your treasure is, your heart will be also,” said Jesus Christ. A pedestrian reduction of the Son of God’s saying is: Follow the money.  CONTINUED HERE

If the laity can dissent on essential moral doctrines of the Catholic Church what is the basis of their maintaining a Catholic identity?

In his conclusion, Kelly J. Wilson responds to E. Scott Lloyd’s article by saying, “That is why I would hope to never leave the Church, and I would love to have discussed this with Ms. Rice. Given the quality of ‘The Church According to Governor O’Malley,’ no doubt Mr. E. Scott Lloyd would very much have benefited from listening in on such a conversation.”

I am wondering how Lloyd could benefit from such a discussion.   A fellow Catholic could try to persuade Ann Rice to abandon views which dissent from the moral teachings of the Church but if she refuses to adhere to those moral doctrines held by Church authority should she really stay a member of the Catholic Church?

Is it really possible for Ann Rice or any other Catholic who dissents from the moral doctrines of the Catholic Church to remain a Catholic in good conscience?
